How to add breadcrumbs to your website (for free!)
Breadcrumbs are the little trail of links at the top of a page that help your customers to know where abouts they are in your digi home. Having breadcrumbs makes you a good host.
Your customer can easily get lost without this guide on your pages, the bigger your website gets. Breadcrumbs are an ideal solution because they appear at the top of the page and, at a glance, show your visitors where they are in the hierarchy of your links. In this post I’ll show you how to get Breadcrumbs on your own WordPress website for free.
I’ll show you in Divi, which is what I set my clients up with, but you can easily use the code with any Theme.
1
Install Yoast
Log in to your wordpress site, and navigate to “Plugins” on the left hand side in your dashboard.
Click “Add New” and type “Yoast” into the search bar.
When you see “Yoast”, click download.
2
Activate Yoast
Once you’ve installed Yoast you’ll need to activate it – so don’t forget the click the “activate” button!
3
Enable Breadcrumbs
Once you’ve activated Yoast you need to enable Breadcrumbs. Enable Yoast breadcrumbs by clicking SEO > Search Appearance > Breadcrumbs on the WordPress dashboard, then go to the Breadcrumbs tab and click Enabled in the Breadcrumbs settings section.
4
Add Breadcrumb Code
Now you can add the breadcrumbs code wherever you would like breadcrumbs to appear. You can add to your PHP file (search google for instructions!), but that’s normally way too complicated for your average Joe. So it’s easiest to add them manually, as a GLOBAL module in Divi.
- Go to a page where you would like to add breadcrumbs (in edit mode, in wordpress)
- Add a ‘code’ module
- Insert the code Home -
- That’s it!
